Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Real shocker for me first time I saw it. Not suitable under a certain age in my opinion. I like watching this from time to time just to get a “slap” and reset the way I regard some of the things around me. The actors didn’t have to try very hard, but the director did a smashing job. The story features 2 different types of drug addicts: the legal and the illegal ones, and puts them in parallel showing us, using sometimes explicit images, where you might end up in search of your fix. Also you might recognize some of the soundtrack.

The Beach (2000)

It is probably one of the few well-known movies that hasn’t win any big award. It’s “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio and it’s one of the actor’s biggest roles. Some people say that paradise has it’s price and in his way for finding the paradise island Richard meets a couple convincing them to travel with him. When he arrives on the island Richards finds out he must never speak about it or show the map. It is not a movie that will entertain you but it is a film that work for relaxing techniques.

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)

I definitely regard this as one of my favorite classics. Huge cast featuring, among others, Al Pacino and Kevin Spacey. The story, is about one episode in the professional life of a group of sales men, each struggling to reach their own targets. Don’t expect visual or sound effects because there are non whatsoever. Watch it as you would watch a theater play and try to put yourself in each of the characters shoes. Anyway, it’s a classic so make sure you treat it that way.

Snatch (2000)

Probably the most famous English movie of the last couple of decades, Snatch is the best creation of Guy Richie yet (at a tie with Revolver as far as I’m concerned). One might even say Richie is the Tarantino of UK but with a larger accent on pamphlet and humor. Snatch is no exception. The characters and their behavior make all the movie worth while. From start to finish you are fully connected and this happens every time. Try to watch the faces of the characters in the background when stuff happens … funny

Kill Bill I (2003)

This has Japanese cartoons written all over it. Tarantino did not let me down with this. The plot is built by a woman seeking revenge. But this is no ordinary woman. She is a trained ex-professional killer, and kill she will. Ridiculous amounts of blood is splashing around in every fight. Some of you might say this is nothing short of ridiculous. I say, it all about the attitude you have whilst facing it. The story is realistic but the way it is transformed on film is quite crazy. Great for martial art lovers and for those who enjoy the shocking flavor it projects in the atmosphere.

Kill Bill 2 (2004)

The first part left it all open. I regards the second part worse then the first. It’s not that shocking anymore. The woman is closer to getting her revenge. And the closer she gets the more we see parts of her history and how she became what she is now. This part is pretty predictable and even boring here and there. All this inevitably leads up to the last confrontation, just like in a video game, with the big boss. After some meaningful (or not) dialog, the last fighting scene begins. A bit weak to be honest.

The Machinist (2004)

Christian Bale makes one of the best roles of his career, but the movie has a scenario that really suck. And it sucks because a few other people made great movies pretty much with an ending like this one. Make no worry for Brad Anderson, the director filmed a highly appreciated movie in 2008 called: Transsiberian. Returning to our topic let me tell you that “The Machinist” is about a very skinny worker with sleeping problems who deals with some situations that doesn’t make sense for him. They will make sense in the end.

Ray Robinson Charles was one of the greatest artists of the world and Jamie Foxx received an Oscar Award for his performing role in the biographic movie about him. The movie was released in the year the star died of cancer. He was 78 years old. The story of the blind piano singer will probably never die because of Taylor Hackford, the director who inserted the memories in a good motion picture. It’s about money, success, life, music and color. Recommended to old music lovers.

Finding Neverland (2004)

The birth of Peter Pan and his magical world full of adventures. Straight of the bat you’ll notice somewhat of a different air then most Johnny Depp movies. He plays the role of a famous London play writer trying to rejuvenate his carrier. A beautiful widow and her children become his muse. They help him realize something that most of us have forgotten: the fact that a child’s spirit is always within. By the end of the movie he ends up writing one of his greatest successes. Great family movie filled with unexpected symbolism.

Men of Honor (2000)

If you were to watch this in 2000 then for sure it might have a bigger impact. Straight from the spoiling title you realize what the whole idea of the movie is. A new African-american recruit wants to become a navy diver so he relies on his ambition to make it into probably the most racist communities out there: the US navy. If it were’t for Cuba Gooding Jr. and especially for Robert DeNiro, this movie might have never been nominated for a Grammy. Worth while seeing it once dough.
